I’ve been playing guitar 35 years (never professionally). In early 2008, I got a wild hair and decided to give the Mandolin a try. I figured since it was so small, it must be pretty easy to play. WRONG!!! It didn’t take me long to figure out that the Mandolin was a completely different animal from the guitar. But after a while, I managed to teach myself the basic chords and then a couple of tunes. To learn more, I attended a Bluegrass Jam camp in Nashville. Once I saw the pros playing Bluegrass the way it is supposed to be played I was hooked. I haven’t plugged in an electric guitar for quite a while now. Well with my confidence up, I figured that the fiddle would be an easy transition from the Mandolin. WRONG AGAIN!! My first fiddle revelation: BOWING IS A BEAR!!! But I think one thing that has kept me interested is the fact that it is so difficult to play. I must confess that I cheat a bit. While learning new tunes, I get the left hand down first by playing the notes on the mandolin, then move over to the fiddle. I have no dreams or ambitions to ever go “pro”, I just like the mental stimulation of trying to play a tune so that it is recognizable. That’s ok though, I’m sure that someday I’ll be a legend in my own mind.
