Shakin Off the Acorns

Sunday, April 19, 2015

Thought I'd try blogging for the first time.

In the last few months I've been using a different bowing pattern.  Basically it's just 2 note slurs.  A full measure looks like: d d u u d d u u.  It can also be used in half a measure, saw stroking the other 4 notes. For example the slurs at the 2nd half of the measure: d u d u dd uu; or at the beginning d d u u d u d u.

The first tune where I really it going was Hog Eyed Man (learned from David Braggers Youtube lesson).  Since then I seem to be drawn to tunes where this type of bowing fits.

 So here's my take: https://youtu.be/QqJIcSYhmYg

The source is Edden Hammons, but I've gotten most my bowing ideas from David Bragger's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJcC0e-3Bac

I like this bowing because you can really accent the 2 and 4 beat with an up bow.  I'm working on getting a pulse on the up bow but it's not really there yet.

Constructive criticism is welcome.

I started on the fiddle in August 2013. I picked up a cheap instrument on ebay while I was home for a visit. I've been living in Namibia for 15 years. There isn't much of a music scene here. Other than playing for myself, I play for my kids. I want them to know this part of American culture (in my opnion the best part). I've playing guitar and singin around the house for years. One day in the car we heard Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr Bojangles". My kids said, "Daddy they're playing your song!" You can imagine how that made me feel. Well, my favorite music is old time fiddle music. So I figured I'd give the fiddle a try. I figured I'd learn a few tunes, play them around the house for kicks, and give my kids a little taste of this music. I have learned a few tunes, more than a few really, but now I see how much more there is to it than just learning the notes of the tunes. I'm hooked on it! As I read someone else write here on FHO, "I can hardly remember what I did for fun before I picked up the fiddle". My feelings exactly. Anyway this website has been the number one, top resource for me and my fiddle ventures. Thanks to all who participate here! Patrick
