Fiddle Growing Pains

Saturday, March 24, 2012

Well, I finally purchased a new set of strings for my violin the other day!  Something as a bass & guitar player, I do quite often!  Well, the whole process brought back some "fond" memories of learning to restring an instrument and going through the process of finding which brand of strings suits me best.

I spoke with the owner of a local music shop and he recommended the brand Octavia and since I was just learning, he recommended the "Super-sensitive."  ......still not sure if that's the brand or the type of strings! LOL  Well, I've come to the conclusion that I DO NOT like these strings!

After breaking them in for a period of a week, I've already had the E string break, seemingly out of nowhere, and I am having all kinds of trouble with the tone of the D string.  The open notes sound great, but it seems like I need to press down much harder then before to get a clear note on the finger board.

Unfortunately, the local music store only carries this brand of strings.  The closest violin shops are over 50 miles away. I am actually considering order a new set online but am a little nervous to do so.  I don't have enough experience with violin strings to be comfortable doing so.

I would love to hear some suggestions!  Remember, I'm also a Bass Guitar player who prefers medium strings.  I love to play (well attempt anyway's) blue grass, cajun, folk and any civil war era music!

I'd like to keep the cost down, but understand that you really do pay for what ya get.  I've seen some familiar brands out there to such as D'Addario.....but as far as bass strings go, they are horrible!  Not sure if it's the same with violin strings!

I'm also concerned with how the strings lay in the peg box.  My D and A strings seem to lightly touch the E peg.  I've seen several other violins set up the same way, but it just gets me nervous when tuning!

Once I change a few more sets of strings out, I should be a pro in no time!

I am about as social as one can get and a fierce friend to those closest to me. I'm a goofball and a geek, and can be the dumbest smart-person you'll ever know! I am a musician, artist and writer all rolled into one. I tend to live life on the lighter side but can be serious when called upon. I can talk your ear off yet worry you when I'm quiet. I can be the biggest pain in the butt when I feel like it, but my friends know when to call me out on it. I'm not afraid to tell you "I don't know" when I don't know and appreciate my friends who can do the same. I enjoy intelligent conversation and surround myself with like-minded people! Any my kind of people........Musicians of all kinds!!
