I started playing the violin in 4th grade and played in orchestra until 7th grade when I quit playing violin and begin learning guitar, banjo, etc. Fiddle playing really took off upon moving to Columbia, MO for forestry school at the University of Missouri (1978). There I lived at and help manage the Chez Coffeehouse, a venue for folk and old-time music. Chris German was a good friend and early teacher. Roomed and played music with Joe Newberry. At this point in time I was exposed to great musicians. There were the traditional old-time Missouri fiddlers, Taylor McBaine (perhaps my greatest influence), Pete McMahon, Jake Hockmeyer, etc. The their were younger players who became life-long friends, Cathy Barton, Dave Para, Heinrich Leonhardt, Jim Ruth, Joe Newberry, Paul Fotch, Win Grace.....Spencer Galloway and Rob Golan were playing Apalachain style back then which I also fell in love with. Here I met my wife Melissa who became my love and to this day my most cherished music partner (Melissa plays back up rythm guitar). Move to Mountain View, Arkansas for my first forestry job where I played fiddle with the Leatherwoods, at the Ozark Folk Center and for Grandpa Jones Dinner Theater. Won the Arkansas State Fiddling Championship one year. Melissa & I played music for a living during our time in Arkansas. During this time we met so many great musicians and made so many life-long friends.........Kay Thomas, Robert & Mary Gillihan, Bob & Pat Momich, Ron & Alisa Wall, Jean Jennings, Albert Sands, Pam Simmons, Dave & Maria Smith. Some of the fiddlers that I enjoyed the most while in Mountain View were Buddy Lancaster, Ramona Jones, Gerald Bonds, Kirk Hunter (Texas fiddler), Sam Younger, & Faye Green. We moved back to Kansas in 1990 and have been in Manhattan since 1995. Melissa and I play for dances and sometimes perform at festivals though not very often. I enjoying playing fiddle with my good friend Doug Dubois from Lawrence. I love playing music with my friend Chris Biggs, a great flat picker and also with KS Heart a bluegrass band with Mike & Vickie Theobald, a variety of bass players, (Rick Desko).
