Here we are in the very first week of my fiddling adventure. My only musical experience was way back in middle school with a recorder and Hot Cross Buns. Having always loved a combination of Appalachian, Old Time and Old Scottish fiddle, the bug finally bit when I had the chance to bow my first string on a friend's 90 year-old fiddle.
My first fiddle is an unmarked Czech, made around 1950. It boasts a sweet, mellow sound. I have another on the way. Did I say I was bit?
So far this first week, I've stuck mostly to practicing scales. I've worked on G scale and a little on D scale. I've played with the first line of Joy to the World on both scales. I'm doing better hearing the notes, though I'm still not hitting them every time I try. G string seems to be the hardest for me to find the notes. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to hold my left hand. At times, my fingers don't seem quite long enough.
I'm averaging about an 1 to 1.5 hours practice. Three days in, and I have very sore spots on my fingertips.7 comments
