in May:
As May arrived and the Berklee College semester ended, I'm saying "farewell" to a lot of great young players who are graduating. It's a fantastic fiddle scene out here in the Boston Area, as great young players come in, move to Nashville, move back here again, try Brooklyn, then Nashville... then Denver, and back to Boston... But the Artistworks Fiddle School continues 24/7/365: We are all constantly learning more about music all the time!

In the West...
I just completed a very fun tour of the Pacific Northwest with singer-songriter Emy Phelps, and managed to do some well-received workshops during that trip as well.    I also had the chance to sit in with some good friends and a sort of musical hero:   Sean Watkins, Tristan Clarridge (interviewed on my Artistworks site!) and the extremely cool & wonderful Bill Frisell…in Seattle, of course. We played a bunch of bluegrass fiddle tunes…weird for Bill, great for me, Tristan, and Sean.

I finished a couple of composition commissions, one for violinist Regina Carter & cellist Patrice Jackson, and one for the incredible Rachel Barton Pine! I wrote a nice slightly funky gospel-ish tune for the two Soulful String Sisters.  The piece for Rachel is one movement of her great idea: The New American Partitas for Solo Violin. I think she's commissioning a hoedown, a waltz, and a rag. I got the rag.

...and I'm excited about my next giant batch of lessons, recorded at ArtistWorks Central, early in June!: Lots of expansion and detail clarifying existing lessons, brand-new tunes, a new Bluegrass series of Iconic Breaks that I've been threatening to do for years, and some Gypsy Jazz lessons... wow. It's a pile.

Emy Phelps and I have a new recording...Buy this here!

Fiddler, composer, producer and educator,  Darol Anger is at home in a number of musical genres, some of which he helped to invent. Exceptional among modern fiddlers for his versatility and depth, Anger has helped drive the evolution of the contemporary string band through his involvement with numerous pathbreaking ensembles such as his Republic Of Strings, the Turtle Island String Quartet, the David Grisman Quintet, Montreux, his Duo with Mike Marshall, and others. He has performed and taught all over the world with musicians such as Dr. Billy Taylor, Bela Fleck, Bill Evans, Edgar Meyer, Bill Frisell, Marin Alsop and the Cabrillo Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony, Mark O’Connor, and Stephane Grappelli. Today Darol can be heard on NPR's "Car Talk" theme every week, along with Earl Scruggs, David Grisman and Tony Rice. He has recorded and produced scores of important recordings since 1977, is a MacDowell and UCross Fellow, and has received numerous composers’ residencies and grants. He has been a featured soloist on dozens of recordings and motion picture soundtracks. He is an Associate Professor at the prestigious Berklee School of music. He recently began an ambitious online Fiddle School at www.ArtistWorks.com. And Blablabla!
