Well, my timing is off. Bad. As Milton Burle used to say, "timing is everything". Woe is me
When I was learning the banjo, it was beat into me (no pun intended) to always play with a 'nome. This was not the case with the fiddle and so I neglected using one when practicing. Now I'm paying for it. My last lesson had me asking how to get a good groove going in a tune like Fly Around My Pretty Little Miss. That led to me learning that I couldn't find the beat well when playing and that my timing was lousy.
I can hum the tune and tap my foot. I can hum a tune and listen to a 'nome. To some degree I can play a tune and keep up with the 'nome most times, BUT what has proven to be very much impossible is to play the tune with the 'nome going and also tap my foot. Just too much going on.
I have also realized that my waltzes are off, off ,off. I thought they sounded pretty good lately, until I put them up against a metronome and wow... I stink. As my teacher says, "If your timing is off, the waltzers can't dance". So, now I'm practicing tunes with that lousy 'nome beeping in my ear. I am also doing my scales to specific notes (Whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, etc). This whole practice thing smacks of effort...darn, I thought I'd be touring with Molsky by now!
