1st experiment with crosstuning

From slimman53 on 4/12/2011 5:24:32 AM

Just started trying GDgd tuning. (Dying Californian, Tombigbee Waltz)  What other simple tunes would you Old crosstuners suggest to start?

Still a little shy about tuning up at this point.

Hi Slimman,

xG is one of my favourite alternate tunings. I love the dark drones and it's fun to be able to play in two octaves especially if you're playing in a small group. Sometimes I tune down to FCFC if it fits a tune.

Some tunes are typically played in xG but most cross tunes are played in xA. Cross tuning is cross tuning really, the one and five in two octaves, it's just how the pitch suits.

Jeff Sturgeon is in xG. There's a great youtube of Bruce Molsky playing it.
Some simpler xA tunes that come to mind are Breaking Up Christmas (Tommy Jarrell), Buffalo Gals (Robert Sykes I think), Crow Creek (Stelle Elam). There's also a really sweet 5 part version of Little Rabbit Where's Your Mammy (youtube.com/watch?v=D1fgWcrgzs...7EB5CBE92). This is the version but I like it slowed way down.

Hope you'll find some tunes you like : )
Caroline.

The Uncle Bunt Stephens tune Candy Girl has a simple melody and is rhythmically fun.
Here's a link youtube.com/watch?v=VRmeAdeo7kU. At about 3:00 he slows right down and plays it alone. After that he teaches a really cool bow technique - gotta go practice...
