Why learn to play fiddle?
Because it’s the greatest thing in the world to do! I should know – I’ve been playing fiddle now for 42 years, as a solo performing musician, as a band member and as a fiddle teacher. My job as fiddle teacher is to share my joy and enthusiasm with you and to show you how to “get there” yourself.
It’s a great door-opener to be a fiddler. You meet all sorts of interesting people at workshops, festivals, jam sessions, and classes. Musicians at all levels are ready to share their tips and welcome you into the circle.
You don’t need to be afraid of a violin. Many people fear that this wonderful means of expression is simply beyond them. And (I hate to say it) many have been put off in their youth by family or teachers that told them they had no musical ability. Would any teacher today have the gall to tell their students that they were incapable of learning English or math? Bah! Humbug! Yet, as far as music is concerned, this unfortunately has been common.
Your talent is there.
There’s an old Irish expression, “Every tinker has his own way of dancing.” You have your own unique strengths and learning models that work best for you. My job is to find this out about you and to build from there while strengthening areas where you are more challenged. The group dynamic of the Beginning Fiddle class works well to enhance ear training and build synergy among the musicians, but I also work one-on-one with each student in the class.
I hope you will join us.
Best regards,
Kit Fallon

Kit Fallon Beginning Fiddle Class - West Bloomfield 69 Brook St. Geneva, NY 14456 ########### Name: _________________________________ BEGINNING FIDDLE CLASS QUESTIONNAIRE Why do you want to learn fiddle? Do you play an instrument? If so, which one(s) and in what style? Can you read music on the treble clef (“G” clef)? Can you sing a song you heard on the radio or from a recording? Remember all the words? What kind of fiddle music do you really like? (e. g. Bluegrass, Irish, etc.) Have you ever studied classical violin? Are you left-handed? Do you have any physical problems with your hands, fingers or wrists? Do you have a full-size violin and bow to use in class? If yes, the following are necessary set up items and accessories: . Fine tuners on each string . New or recently purchased strings . Properly fitted pegs. . Shoulder pad . Violin bow with horse hair. (not plastic “hair”) . Rosin Note: If you have an instrument that has been sitting in an attic for 20 years, please take it to be set up by a reputable music dealer (I recommend The String House in Rochester) before bringing it to the first class. Otherwise it is likely to fall apart the first time the strings are tightened. Will you need to rent a violin? Any questions you would like me to answer in the first class? Thanks for your input, and I look forward to seeing you in class! Kit Fallon ########################### Kit Fallon Musician, Performer, Teacher Kit has been a performing fiddler for nearly 40 years, and has taught fiddle classes through adult education programs at Cayuga Community College, Finger Lakes Community College, and independently at numerous venues in Rochester and the Finger Lakes region. She is currently a member of The Unholy Alliance (Finger Lakes fiddle/banjo duo), The Wastrels (Rochester and points east – Celtic, Blues, Old-Time, Cajun, Appalachian, Adirondack styles), Dogtown (Geneva – jazz, original), and Miller’s Wheel (Finger Lakes – original, novelty). These groups perform regularly at local wineries, restaurants, bars, outdoor events, parties, and weddings. Kit started playing fiddle at age 19 when she was a student at SUNY Potsdam. She discovered a local group, the St. Regis String Band, and, after many long nights of parties at their remote farmhouse, picked up the old-time string band style by ear. Back before the Internet, there were few resources for learning folk music or styles of fiddle playing except through records or by direct contact with other fiddlers. Over the years, through the synergy of shared music, Kit learned the wide range of fiddle styles and techniques she now shares with students. Kit’s 10-week fiddle classes (Levels 1, 2 and 3) focus on basic fiddle techniques, and also explore particular fiddle styles (Celtic, Bluegrass, French Canadian, Cajun...) of interest to individual students. Her hands-on approach to teaching begins with identifying each student’s learning style and incorporating this with class teamwork to get the group playing music right away. “I always tell my beginning students that they will be playing a tune in the second class. Many of them don’t believe me, but they always manage to pull it off! It’s wonderful to see them light up, when it happens. From that point on, anything is possible.” Contact info: ckfallon@hotmail.com 1 comment

I learned old-time fiddle during college (back in the day!) when the string band revival was in full swing. Over the years I have played in numerous acoustic bands doing everything from contra-dance music to novelty jazz.. Currently I am in a traditional/Appalachian/Celtic/Blues band called The Wastrels (CD available!) and a novelty/original music band, Miller's Wheel. I teach fiddle classes, beginning with old-time style and branching out into other genres as we move long.
