Hey - if you are near any jewery stores, you can check into plating there - or machine shops -(or look under plating in phone book)
(I worked in a jewelry repair store, and we did replating on nickle, gold and silver - with different colored plating -
It doesn't cost all that much =

A friend of mine gave me a chunk of scrap maple to make the new tuning block from. I haven't done anything except draw out the basic shape for it, but here's that anyhow (why not?):
I think I'm going to go back to his place and borrow his band-saw to rough the block out. He lives an hour away, so I'll have to find a good day with a few spare hours in it.

-and you can imagine that I was trying to figure out where marble would go - (yea, I finally reread it)
and luck on the plating? you may need to get button/heads for the pegs in black (aside from the nickle)

I'm getting the nickel tuners with black buttons. They have been ordered. Once they arrive, I'll see how they really look, and whether I'm really that desperate to have them plated. That Phoenix mandolin guy said the price of plating had really gone up in the last few years....I don't know. I've been too darn busy to look into local plating services yet. Midterms are sort of happening about now.

More the varnish is slowing me down, waiting for it to dry. I've just done the second coat. Also, I haven't been able to get to my friend's shop to use his bandsaw yet, so my tuning block is still a giant chunk of wood at this point. A minor slow-down, I'll get it going again as soon as I can.

I used this kind of pen in black, in the medium, fine, and superfine tips, though mostly just the fine.

I'd say it took about an hour per section, so 12 hours total, though it may have been more. And it's not nearly as intricate as a lot of real hardangers! But thank you.

Last india inking i did (pen and Ink) was done with either a wooden changeable nib pen with a bottle of ink, or a fountain type pen with metal nib also - (and bottle of ink)
maybe I should revamp my crazy drawing skills! those look fun!

Yeah, these make it easier! I've done the fountain pen thing, and I like them, but they can get messy, and I always forget to clean the pens and the get clogged.

I think I am going to do just one more coat of varnish, but I think it's looking pretty nice so far. Oh, and since I got an actual camera, I can take better pictures of it than I could with the little iCam at the top of my mac's screen, which is nice.

I don't have a good sketch, sorry.
Basically the plan is to saw off most of the existing pegbox at a slight angle (so that the tuning block attaches angled down), leaving a short section still there.
The tongue at the base of this tuning block will fit snugly into the stump of the pegbox, and will be attached with strong wood glue and little woodscrews. If I don't mess it up, that is.

Since I don't have any clamps, I held this together for half an hour while the glue set. And yes, I am doing all this at 5 in the morning, not having gone to bed yet.
The joint is holding so far:
I do plan to smooth down those pointy bits that protrude above the tuning block.
Now I need a few tiny woodscrews. And then I will do the finish on that block & add the tuners....
