When I came home from work today I found an email from fiddledan: "Coming to the jam tonight? We'll be there and perhaps Miles (Krassen) also." I'd forgotten tonight was the Rincon Market jam. I'd only been there once before, as a grinner. I was beat from work, but really wanted to meet Miles Krassen. And it could be a great chance to test out my new digital recorder that arrived yesterday. I went, and even brought my fiddle, knowing I couldn't possibly keep up, but hoping maybe I could pick out a few notes now and then. Didn't think I'd actually get called on...
This was the only thing I could think of that I could play reasonably close to speed (since it's a slow waltz!). I'd heard Dan do it at a contradance before Christmas and he taught it to me in a lesson. Tombigbee Waltz (in AEAE) tuning. Fortunately, Dan helped cover most of my mistakes, but then he got sneaky and went down to the low harmony part, leaving me on my own. ![]()
Oh yeah, turns out I never did get to meet Miles. ![]()

Paul,
I can sense the pride in your writing if having had such a good time. Those are pleasant thoughts to keep in your memory always. That's what its all about.

That sounds great, Paul. I should have gone. By the time I got your email reminder, it was too late.
Who's playing that fancy guitar backup? Is that a plectrum banjo?
wormbower - Posted - 01/07/2009: 07:34:04
Thanks, John. Yeah, pretty last minute. You would have enjoyed it. You're very discerning. That was indeed a little tenor banjo, played by the multi-talented and multi-instrumentalist, Craig (don't know his last name but Dan does). Soon as he walked in Dan whispered to me "hope he sits down next to you. He's a great guitar player." Very nice guy, too. I recorded the whole thing.

Craig Tinney. Played guitar with the Buzzards in past years when we played in Tucson and plays with The Privy Tippers - an old time and more band here in Tucson. Craig doesn't often show up and is quite a musician. Played guitar later in the evening. ALways a treat.
Paul, ya did great!
Play nice!

Paul, such a joyful-sounding recording! Wish I could have been there. I've meant to learn that waltz, but wouldn't have thought of playing it in AEAE. Is it easier to play in that tuning?

Thanks very much, Janet. Boy, if you think that was joyful-sounding, you should have heard the tunes that Dan and some of the others led!

That was quite an interesting patchwork of sound. How many musicians was that?
Great job Paul. It's a good sign when your teacher is willing to play with you in public. ![]()
That song in on Jay Ungar's - Waltzes, Airs and Haunting Melodies dvd from Homespun, I believe. I grew up right near a Tombigbee River but had never heard the song before. I like waltzes.

I've got the dots for it, Paul. I just haven't played it (or the fiddle) much over the last 6 -8 months. I agree, it is a fairly simple tune to do, but sounds nice. I was doing it in standard tuning.
I'll try to dig out the sheet and double-check the key.
Also, there are alternate names for this one - it was done by the Arthritis Brothers at their first time at the circle, I need to find the name they did it under.
