Sorry, Paloma. I can't get your music page to work.

I'll send a report to Eric....

BigJohn.

There are four chords used in Bluegrass: G, C, D and another G....

Big John

Thank you for pointing out that problem. I think I fixed it by reloading the above link. Hopefully that will work!
Thanks again!

Good job !

And thanks for fixing the link. (I'm the retired engineer. Why didn't I think of that? )

Paloma-

For a couple of months, you're making good progress! Work on being able to do it for at least 3 times through without a mistake and you will be well on your way.

(I know about the 3 times through, because that is my downfall - I can complete that cycle maybe 3 out of 5 times.)

Not bad for a few months, at least your only sounding one string - which is a challenge in and of itself early on. One thing I hear is something I still struggle with myself at times, clean separation of notes. There's slurring and then there's the un-intentional "hammer off". This occurs when you're slow picking up the finger above the one you're moving down to on the same string. You not only have to put the fretting finger down sharply, the finger you were using before needs to come up sharply too in an effort to get that clean separation of sound.

Thank you all for your kind comments.

Banjo Brad - I agree the key is playing AB parts multiple times without mistakes.

Another hurdle is just posting this and getting feeling somewhat competent. Sometimes feel like giving up but then I'll get a confidence boost or a song that I'd really like to learn.

Intonation is sounding pretty good. Thats been an elusive thing for me. I play fretless banjo all the time, and I hoped that it would help me with the fiddle, but its been a struggle.

I am a newbie as well, but it sounds to me like you are well on the road.

Yoppari

Don't know how far along I am, but I appreciate the comments.
I want to thank you though because of your posting a music file gave me some courage to do so. I think you were one of the first or the first.

We went to see some cousin-in-laws (Wichita Mountain Bluegrass) play at a little country opry last night. They were missing their banjo player so my dh played with them. It made me hungry to get good enough on the fiddle to play with a band.

One of these days, Paloma, if you feel daring, try a a hammer-on (E to F) for the F that comes two notes after the initial high A.

It doesn't take much to do it, but it does "fancy up" the tune.

You're doing quite nicely and obviously have some fiddling ability!

You're doing an incredible job for just a few months.

Here's a "fun" way to lift your spirits when you get to thinking "I'm lousy". (which we all do from time to time no matter HOW long you've been playing.)

Keep a recording of yourself from NOW...and in a few weeks give it a listen against a more recent recording. Just keep doing that from time time. You'll be blown away at how far you've come.

When I think about those first few weeks of noise off those strings...and I hear myself now I say "maybe I should stick to the banjo!!"
