I uploaded an air - Lament for the Country House Dance. It was written by Junior Crehan and really touched me because I've always been a dance fiddler.

I have included a couple of links which go into this and the loss to the irish music, and the income these provided -

Definitely worth checking out - and I am posting it as a topic in case someone misses this -

I would add that Junior Crehan contributed many other tunes to the Irish repertoire, including a well known jig, the Mist Covered Mountain. There is a book and cd set of his tunes available.

Sharon, where can I order the book and CD from? I love the Mist Covered Mountain too. I didn't know who wrote it, though.

I received the set as a birthday gift, but I would try Ossian USA, Celtic Grooves or Custy's Music (in Ireland). It is called The Last House in Ballymakea, and is a 2 CD set. The book is sold separately. It's a unique window into an earlier era in Irish traditional music.

Sharon, is the actual playing done by Junior Crehan? Also, what area of Ireland was he from, so what Irish style is he known for?

The recording is of Junior Crehan and sometimes friends. There are some stories as well as tunes.
Junior is from west Clare- Miltown Malbay. Bobby Casey is also from west Clare, but lived in London for a long time. P.Joe Hayes and Paddy Canny (Martin Hayes' father and uncle) are from east Clare (Feakle).

Ah, the Clare style. I have a fiddler friend from Ireland who claims my playing is closer to the Clare style, although that is not the style that he likes best. He says the Clair style is more sparce? Not as ornamented? He likes more of a "bog" style, whatever that is. (I don't think your ornamentation is sparse).
Speaking of which, I may be wrong, but it seems to me that Kevin Burke is more choosy with his ornamentation in his newer releases than he was in his old recordings. Or it may just be my ear?

Azfiddle, on the CD is the playing of P. Joe Hayes found as well? I have not heard his playing and would like to.

P.J. Hayes is not on the Jr. Crehan CD- but there is a recording out with PJ Hayes and Paddy Canny, from the 1960s- recently re-released on CD: Paddy Canny & P.J. Hayes: All Ireland Champions- Violin.
