Tried out the Black Diamonds this weekend. They were much louder on my fiddle than my current strings(helicores) I enjoyed the sound they were giving off. I am very happy with my purchase. I spent much more money on my darn helicores and these seem to sound louder and brighter on my fiddle. Go figure.

I've never used anything but Prims on my fiddles. But, couldn't resist trying these Black Diamond #7207. I like them alot and in fact they feel like Prims but are more vibrant sounding. For the price $14.99 a set I will continue to use them instead of Prims. When I first bought Prims they were selling for around 16 dollars and look at them now~~~.

I always got some scratchy sound with Prims on some bow passages that I never got with BD 7207s.

LOL! I get those sounds no matter the strings or the fiddle!

Well I was at Charles Horner's shop in TN yesterday and he had some cheap Pirastro strings on his fiddles.  They had a light blue wrap at the ball end.  They were pretty nice.  I think they were steel but I have never seen that wrap before.  They did not produce that scratchy sound either.

DougD - Posted - 07/23/2011:  11:01:52

Maybe Piranito? Pirastro describes the wrap as "blue gray." The other possibility might be Violino, but they're not exactly cheap. Chuck probably knows.

I checked the chart, they are Piranito.  They changed to a more blue gray since I last used them on the ball end.

The Piranitos are roughly the same price as Prims, maybe just a buck or two cheaper.

Everything is going up but that which is coming in!

The chart I downloaded said they were blue gray as well.

I think I bought a set of these back when this thread started. I had tried 1 A string vs 1 A string Helicore and went with Helicore set for my Drone/Cross tune/OldTime fiddle.

In the end I took the Helicores off because I found them a bit whimpy, especially on G string.

I was preparing my StringWorks Soloist fiddle to sell it (after borrowing the Evah Pirazzi's off it) and needed to put something on.

So I figured, what the heck I'll try the Black Diamonds. I must say I'm impressed.

They seem to bring something out of this fiddle no other strings has (I think I have 8 different brands, none less $50.00).

Be curious how they hold up.

I put a set of 7207s on my fiddle last week. I have been using Prims for a long time and the ones I took off had been on for a year or so. Anyway, the Black Diamonds were very tough for me to play.. a LOT of squeeking and notes that produce more that the note I am after... I had to bow very lightly or I'd get that "extra" note. I figured it was the dry winter weather and the newness, but after playing for a week there was no change. I hated them, so I ordered another set of Prims. Put them on this morning and bingo, my fiddle is back to it's old self. Plays and sounds great. The old Prims played ok right before the change and again, immediately after putting on new ones. Go figure. I guess my fiddle is particular.

darnthorny,

I think MOST fiddles are particular. And actually, I think the cheaper they are, the more particular they are.

mswlogo,

I'm glad you found a fiddle that likes 'em. So far, with mine, they've not done well... okay, I haven't tried them on my main playing fiddle yet,
because the Prims are sounding SO good, I'm having a hard time believing anything will sound better, and "it ain't broke, don't fix it!" But I really should try them on Booker and see what happens.

Right I have not tried them on my main fiddle yet either, and my main fiddle is sounding so good with Evah Pirazzi's I don't want to mess with it either.

I also agree my main better fiddle sounds good with lots of strings and my cheaper fiddle, that is on the thicker heavier side, seems more fussy.

If you are using Evah Pirazzi's an liking them why would you go from a $75 set of strings to a $15 set of strings and think you would get the same sound and result?  If you are a fiddler not wanting to spend a fortune on strings, the DB 7207s are great.  My wife uses expensive strings, but I don't necessarily.

mswlogo - Posted - 01/26/2012:  06:32:56

I had Evahs on the cheap fiddle and now put black diamonds and they absolutely sound better.

I had $115 Peter Infeld strings on my good fiddle and now prefer the cheaper $75 Evahs.

Who's to say I would not like Black Diamonds on my best fiddle too. I doubt it, but I should try it some time.
