There are now a LOT of companies stocking these, but many have outrageous shipping costs. Since when does it cost 27 bucks to ship a set of strings from GA to PA???? And a lot of them make you go through the checkout process just to determine the shipping cost, which is stupid and annoying.

RobBob - Posted - 09/18/2010:  05:38:32

Ye gads! $27 for shipping? Checkout this link, $6.95 shipping (they are padding their margins at that)
juststrings.com/bkd-7207.html

I've ordered two sets at a time from A-OK, and it was just $5.00 for the shipping. Their cart will lead you to believe it will be $5.00 per set, but it's never worked out that way.

kyluckyman - Posted - 09/18/2010:  20:47:16

Shar has free shipping on "strings only" orders, but I don't think they carry the BD 7207.

RobBob - Posted - 09/19/2010:  07:47:14

So how is this germane to this discussion? I believe it is over $40 for the free orders.

Mike8b140 - Posted - 09/21/2010:  14:50:47

I just ordered a set of the BD7207 from "Just Strings.com " and they charged me $18.82 for the strings and $6.95 for shipping and handling (First Class Mail) to Idaho. I don't consider that a bad price since I have been charged as buch as $56.00 for a set of Helicore medium's here in Idaho Falls.

RobBob - Posted - 09/21/2010:  16:17:16

If we can talk one of the real major players into carrying the strings shipping should go down even more.

bj - Posted - 09/21/2010:  20:43:55

Ken from International hasn't been around much. I'd like to see either them or Prodigy carry these. Or SWStrings. Those are my three string go-to places.

oldtimestrings - Posted - 09/21/2010:  20:51:40

Doesn't seem like it should be a big deal, since pretty much all the big string retailers already carry Super-Sensitive strings. Black Diamond is now part of the same company, so these strings must be available through the same SS suppliers. Has anybody thought just to give some of these places a call, or shoot them all a polite email? I would do it, but I haven't tried the strings.

Might be worth mentioning to them that the fiddlers from Cherryholmes, one of the hottest contemporary BG groups, endorse these very strings. Black Diamond must not have much of a marketing department, if they haven't made sure that at least a few popular resellers carry these strings. What good is a high-profile endorsement if consumers can't even obtain the product easily?

RobBob - Posted - 09/22/2010:  05:11:12

I have contacted a couple of outlets and they are waiting to see if there is some kind of demand. These are recessionary times in spite of what you may hear on happy talk shows so dealers are playing it close to their chests. If we all start asking SWS, Prodigy, etc to carry them, they may take the hint.

Thanks that is great! After Clifftop I put a set of Helicores on I was not enjoying fiddling. Put the BD 7207s on and can't stop! Well I did to write this, now I am off.

fiddler59 - Posted - 09/22/2010:  08:24:21

RobBob,
How do the 7207's compare to Thomastik Precisions or Chromecor's ?? They are so cheap I am going to order a couple of sets anyway. I was just curious what your thoughts were since you wrote the article for Fiddle Magazine on steel strings a while back. By the way, I really enjoyed the feature you did on Joe Thrift you did in the current issue. Joe is a very talented luthier and a great Old-Time fiddler too. I love some of the tunes he has written. The last fiddle I played of his was a Del Gesu pattern and I have to say, it might have been the best fiddle I have ever played in my 40+ years of fiddling. Too bad it was already sold :(

I think they compare favorably to Prims in feel, a little smoother wrap than Prim. They are not as bright as Precisions and I haven't played Chromecors in years so I can't really say. Joe is a wonderful luthier and musician.

I'm in need of new strings so I'm going to give these a try. Just ordered a set from A-OK for $18.75 total which includes the $2.50 shipping. Fits my budget nicely.

ironworker - Posted - 09/22/2010:  09:17:57

thanks again to Bob B. for his heads up on these strings- fine value, comparable to prims IMO.

call your favorite suppliers- they will stock them if people continue to ask for them.

Audubon Strings has Black Diamond Vintage Violin strings for $15.13. I'm fairly certain these are the 7207's.
Free shipping as well to US customers on all strings.

mswlogo, finding these strings is not the problem. One of the outfits that offers them that your find thing spit out is offering them for $16.39 plus shipping. The shipping options?

Zip Code: 18042
Shipping method(s) for United States
UPS/FedEx/DHL (1 x 1.06lbs)
Overnight Priority $89.30
Overnight $56.13
Overnight Saver $52.01
2nd Day $26.33
3 Day $21.14
Ground $17.35

Most of the places with shopping carts make you go through the whole registration procedure before they'll give you the shipping cost, only for you to find out that it's comparable to the above. So order from one of the recommended vendors.

fiddler59, I'd ask whether those strings are the 7207's before placing the order.

fiddler59 - Posted - 09/24/2010:  04:33:11

I have and am waiting for the reply......if I don't get an email response I'll call them !!

M-D - Posted - 09/24/2010:  04:42:42

Wow! Such a deal! I ordered a dozen sets, on a dozen different orders, each with that special "Overnight Priority" shipping!

Now I can tell people 'bout them extravagantly expensive, ultra hoity-toity, oh-so chic, but oh-so-worth-it strings I use. Before, it was really embarrassing to tell people that I played on great, inexpensive strings. Gave me a real complex having to disclose that, whilst others were shelling out the big bucks on Eva, and Dominants, and Vision, and. . . . Them mere mundanes aint got nuthin' on me now!

Thanks, BJ!

(Note: To my friends: I'll still talk to you, and you need not genuflect when in my presence. A simple bow from the waist, or an humble curtsy will suffice. To all others: You will fall prone before me. No need to thank me, though. I'm really a nice guy that way.)

RobBob - Posted - 09/24/2010:  04:56:13

At $15 that is a very good price for them and waaay too much for the Fiddle string. i did not see Prim at the Audubon site so maybe they carry DB instead?

fiddlepogo - Posted - 09/25/2010:  01:06:15

I put in a special order at my local music store for the Black Diamond 7207's...
I figured if they carry Super Sensitives, they can get the Black Diamonds.

Looking forward to giving them a try.

Mike8b140 - Posted - 09/26/2010:  06:26:50

I recieved my order of BD7207 strings and immediately put them on my fiddle. They went on easily and tuned up with out any problems. The sound is not as loud as the helicores but they are easy to play and for the price are a GREAT Deal! They are everything ROBBOB said they were. Thanks ROBBOB for helping us with a great new string at a reasonable price.

RobBob - Posted - 09/26/2010:  06:59:47

Yes, I noticed that they were not quite as loud as Helicores, but they do carry well with a good project IMHO. The last set of Helicores I put on had issues with strange overtones and a response that I did not care for, so I put the BD back on am happy again.

Those are the strings. Just google "black diamond vintage violin strings" and the first thing that pops up is a pic of the 7207 package.

I wrote Shar customer service today asking them to carry the BD 7207. We'll see what they say...

SouthWest Strings said they will start stocking 7027's in a couple of weeks.......curious to see there price.

RobBob - Posted - 09/26/2010:  18:24:09

Great! I contacted them a while back with no response. Strings and Beyond in Charlotte gave me the run around so who knows and their fiddle string prices are not that competitive.

kyluckyman - Posted - 09/27/2010:  10:36:06

Here is what Shar had to say:

Dear Mr. Daniel,

Thank you for your email. Very interesting! I’ve used the Black Diamond fiddle strings in the past, and I’d be curious to try out a more refined approach to them. I’ll pass this on to our purchasing department, and see if we can give them a try and see if their new Violin line is something we’d be interested in pursuing.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to respond.

Sincerely,

Sasha B.

Yeah, I hear that a lot. So they can buy their $50 strings and feel good about it.

$50? That's nothing. Have you seen the new Peter Infeld Strings from Thomastik? They're over $100 a set. They might be great strings for classical music, but there's no way they're actually worth that amount of money. Anyone who pays over $100 a set for violin strings is really paying for the satisfaction of knowing they have the most expensive equipment available.

M-D - Posted - 09/27/2010:  14:08:11

That's why I paid that ridiculous shipping for my dozen sets of 7207! That way, them crazy people who pay for such satisfaction know that I'm as crazy as they are. It's the one thing they respect. Ya' gotta' marvel at the genius, huh?

Quick update. I've been playing the Black Diamond 7207s for a few days and I'm liking them. At first I had a few squeaking problems (not something that's usually an issue) but I'm getting used to bowing them and I like the strong, clear fiddle sound. I think they fit the style of playing that I seem to be growing into. I also liked the sound of my fiddle with synthetic strings, though, and I wish I had a second instrument so I could have the best of both worlds.

RobBob - Posted - 09/29/2010:  13:49:14

Interesting. I was playing last night and while moving double stops up the neck during breaks, twice I heard a weird sound, but adjusted my bow and it went a way. I have a 2nd fiddle with synthetic strings on it and while they do have a different sound I am not as fond of that sound. This 2nd fiddle is too loud for the studio where I teach so it has synthetic strings to help tame it down in that setting.

I think audubon strings (store.audubonstrings.com) is less than this, free shipping on string-only orders and they have coupons.

I got first-class service from Audubon Strings, too. Shipped the day after my order, and were here in two days. The price was very good, also.

I am ashamed at how easily influenced I am by those who post on this forum. On the strength of this topic I ordered 2 sets of the BD 7207s and strung up a set on my main fiddle tonight. The first complaint I have is that the G string was too long! And... well I guess that is my only complaint!

I removed a set of Helicores that were probably just two months old and still sounded good. There is quite a difference in the sound of the BDs, and after just an hour or so of playing I really like them. They have a nice fiddle-like tone, but are not harsh at all. In fact they are almost as warm-sounding as the helis. They have good volume as well, they don't seem quieter than the helicores. They have a bit of ringyness, but I'm betting after a few days of playing that will mellow. We'll see how they sound in a couple of weeks, and if they last well. These might be my new string brand. Thanks, Bob, for the tip!

bsnm8 - Posted - 10/08/2010:  23:08:34

After reading M-D's post I took a look at Audobon Strings website. Much better deal than I got at Just Strings. $15.13/set and free shipping. Looks like I have a new string supplier as well!

RobBob - Posted - 10/09/2010:  07:09:08

I have found these strings to be more satisfying that Helicores. I recorded a blues session with them and was pleased with how warm and yes fiddle like they sounded on the that piedmont blues session.

How long was that G string Willy? They have had some packaging issues and I brought it to their attention. I am suspecting that these strings were once sold as Super -Sensitive Stellars. I am waiting to hear from John Harrod as he used to use the Stellars and he has some 7207's for his fiddle but he may not have put them on yet.

bsnm8 - Posted - 10/09/2010:  17:46:57

When I wound up the G the first time it wound all the way across to the inside of the peg box, and back two full turns. No big deal (snip snip) and an easy fix. I like these strings even more today, that new-string ringyness is gone and they sound terrific on my fiddle. One thing I noticed is that the string aren't as slick as Helicores, and sometimes when I try to do my intonation correction cheat by sliding into the note, it feels a little grabby on my fingertip. Might go away as I play. Guess I could grease 'em up with a little KY jelly. (only kidding, no admonishments please)

I imagine my hands were pretty greasy and salty since the water was cutoff most of the time at <you know where> so they got plenty of opportunity to corrode. I did have a whistling problem at first, but either they settled down, or I managed to adjust my attack. They remind me of SS's Premiums. I played them this morning, and they tuned right up, played nice fifths, and by all accounts, made good music. I'll be watching for how long they last under my conditions.

Its been almost three months since I put these on, and they are still on! I put some other old but clean well respected steel strings on, but I changed back to the BDs after a couple days. I've ordered two sets from Audobon, and will probably put a new set on in a couple weeks, and move the current set to my backup fiddle. They seem to have the qualities and life that go with fiddling (well, my kind of fiddling anyway). Great steel string for the money IMO.

RobBob - Posted - 10/16/2010:  09:45:20

Jim,

I have found them to be what I want as well. A good, inexpensive steel string that does what I need it to do. No frills, just good sound.

I put them on my fiddles. Love 'em. My violin finally sounds like a fiddle..

Apparently they sometimes need a couple of days to adjust before they sound good. The first two days they squeaked and shrieked--even the D string. Totally unplayable. I looked at rosin. I tried different bows. I was super careful to bow at 90 degrees to the string. I had someone else play. No joy. Day three I picked it up the fiddle and all the problems were magically gone and the sound is great.

Just put a set on the other day. The reviews here are right on! Great strings, great price!!!

Thanks for the warning about the break-in time!!!
I tend to be a little impatient with new strings unless they're just ringy sounding.

I did not have that problem. they sounded better the second day, but still good the first.

M-D - Posted - 10/29/2010:  18:59:57

I'd not noticed that problem, neither.
