I recently changed the strings on my fiddle. Was using Dominant and tried Helicore Medium, which I really like.
When changing strings, from YT videos I've watched, it seems the demonstrator always attaches the string's tail piece to the peg, winds and starts on that end. When I did install my strings, it seemed easier, especially on the G string (thicker) to install the bottom ball end first. I could use 2 hands to negotiate the ball into its slot (maybe that's only necessary on the thicker G string). Is it okay to fix the ball end in first, then insert the strings other end into the peg hole, keeping tension on the string once you start winding on the peg?
Thanks.

Yes, I start with the ball end, then work up. Videos are just one person’s suggestion.

I put the ball end into the tailpiece first as well when installing strings. It doesn’t really matter which end you put on first as long as the string goes on properly. I like to wind the string onto the peg after anchoring it in the tailpiece so that it doesn’t have a chance to slip in the pegbox and become untidy. It’s important to keep the string from jamming up against the pegbox walls so you don’t have undue pressure on one wall.

Either way will work. Heed Rich's point about pegbox wall contact! That can literally cause the wood to crack.
