Haven't had a chance to listen yet, but Niel Gow was born in 1727, and died in 1807, not the 17th century. His second wife (both his wives were named Margaret) died in 1805, and its said that he was so heartbroken that he stopped playing his violin. Eventually his family brought him the instrument, and he played this tune. It was first published in one of his son's collections in 1809. Probably his best known tune today.
