Hey Everybody,

I taught an improvisation workshop in Denver last weekend, and thought you might find the workshop notes and other handout materials useful. Please let me know what you think.

I think you forgot:

"When you make a mistake ... play it twice ... then it sounds like you meant it"

:) Good article.

Well done.
I'd add this for beginners/intermediates:
Learn 2 or more versions of a tune as if they were separate tunes.
Then learn to choose different variations as you are playing.
Do it first on the level of A and B sections. Mix at will...
Think of them as different paths you can take.
The word "licks" has a different implication in improv. than
"variation" does. I might avoid it.

Good call! If you play it twice - then it's JAZZ. :) I'm glad you liked it.

Those are good thoughts. I think of a variation as a full time through the a or b part of the tune. Whereas, I think of a lick as a small chunk - usually 2 measures or less. I did mean creating a bag of licks, but I do also encourage working up different variations. Thanks for your ideas.

Am I doing something wrong? The PDFs aren't coming up for me when I click on the tune..??

Try right clicking on the link and selecting save target as to save the PDF and then open it on your computer. They are working fine for me, so it's likely a problem with your web browser, or with the way Acrobat Reader is working with your web browser.

Thanks,

Vi
