An homage? A tribute? Sheer hacksmanship?

Excellent job. I too feel appropriately hommaged (if that's a word).
I heard that version from Byron Berline on one of the Country Gazette LPs. I would guess that perhaps he heard it from Eck Robertson, but I really don't know for sure.
The Volo innovation on that selection was the use of banjo sticks (like fiddle sticks but....well you get the idea).

Did the Volos record more than one Lost Indian?
This is the version I learned right off their CD:
http://www.fiddlehangout.ws/users/a...47472007.mp3
But on Clifford's recording I don't hear the E tuned to C# (maybe its just my hearing). I mean, they sound similar, but kinda like 2 different takes on the same tune.

Yeah, same CD as I learned it from. And I thought them guys had fiddle(s) tuned AEAC#, so that's how I play it.
BTW, Dwight is the name of the guy with the quote. He's my favorite character on The Office.

Hey Clifford, you're the first person I've heard play that version besides the Volos. Very nice job. It's a killer tune - always made my hair stand on end.
See you in 2 weeks!
Midwest_Fiddler - Posted - 10/08/2007: 09:40:33
If I recall correctly we recorded it in the G equivalent of AEAC#. That would be GDGB I believe. I may be mis-remembering that however. I'll check it out later at home.

Additional info: You can hear a sample of Byron Berline & Country Gazette playing this tune at this link:

Apparently someone has reissued thes two great Country Gazette LPs on CD.

To paraphrase Bob Walters: Well, Dwight, here's Lost Indian. In A, like you wanted it.

Man, that Byron Berline version smokes! Does anyone here play his "Hot Burrito Breakdown?" I think I got that one time down in Texas. I was laid up for a week.
Lynn and Laya: Thanks!
