Some really good Irish players can often have a tune after 1 or 2 go rounds, but not me... so I just sit and enjoy the music. Rarely has it resulted in folks not playing along - if I've called a tune they play.  About the only time I might end up playing solo is when I play a tune no one knows - OR - I play a tune they know , but the version I play is radically different - something like Snake Chapman's version of "Johnny Don't Get Drunk"  - then maybe I'll lose a few,   ...but they might start out with me at the beginning. That happens too. 

"...practiced it until you can lead it haven't you?"   "...wait until the end of your play to have the conversation."   if I know the tune well enough to lead - even with distractions - usually I'm are playing well enough for things like "whose version" doesn't really matter - a curiosity - not an issue.  I'll ask them the same question. I'll try to learn their version if I'm going to be "coming back" soon enough (respect). 

None of that has ever ended "ugly" (for me). It's just part of playing tunes with different folks. Whose wrong? I refuse even try to play that tune. I admit to questioning myself during those times - because rarely do I learn a tune from the "earliest recordings".  But I like what I play. The questions are usually always "whose version are you playing?"

Well I've learnt 90% plus of my tunes playing in sessions and have played lots of different versions and different keys of tunes. I have picked up lots of tunes from scratch at sessions never having heard them before. I just consider it to be a developed skill. Nobody has ever given me an evil eye, no derogatory comments. There definitely are situations where I stop and listen. I used to do a lot of fill in gigs with bands back home in Melbourne playing accordion and often I hadn't a clue what coming next, somehow you just manage to wing it. It is very uncomfortable but satisfying when it works out. That was what I did for a living. Sure beats the 9 to 5. 
you're right about noodling I avoid noodling. It's important to get straight onto the melody. If you're playing something other than the melody it should be something clever that gets in behind and boosts the piece, easy on songs but not so easy on tunes especially when you don't know them.
