I started with a Musicians friend, Rogue bass. I learned about trussrods from that one. The tuning machines always rattled. So I tied a strip of rag around each tuner and knotted it in the middle. Didn't rattle. $80.
Now don't get ahead of me. I was reading reviews. The $60 Glarry P-style bass was getting good reviews for like six years. I ordered one. Tobacco sunburst, to match my Stratocaster ($130 but I digress) It came. I went through all the setup specs. Trussrod, stringheight, intonation, pickup height. I could've gone straight to the gig! I did spring for a set of light bass strings. Then I had to tweak the trussrod an eighth of a turn. To the jam I went! More later!

My son played a Rogue Hofner copy for like 17 years or so. He liked it, but years on the road took its toll.
