This is a Kono violin, made in 2019 and newly set up professionally. The Kono name is beloved among teachers and players throughout the country and even further. They’re often affectionately referred to as “fiddle killers” for their consistent ability to punch well above their weight. They’re nimble and light in the hand but have astonishing power.
I’ve worked on at least hundreds of them (maybe even thousands at this point!) and am always impressed by their consistency. It’s no accident that they’re like that—every one is carefully graduated and given a good bass bar to ensure good tonal character. And they’re all varnished by hand with a good quality varnish that doesn’t choke out the sound as is the case with many commercial instruments.
