I've heard about a DVD once put out by Fiddler Magazine where John Hartford is teaching old time fiddle tunes and how to play what you hear in your head. None of the links or leads shared in previous threads from years ago work anymore. Does anyone know where to obtain the DVD or, if it's no longer in print (and it looks to be that way), video footage? I've heard nothing but good things, and I'm a huge Hartford fan (loved his banjo vids with Homespun too).
I don't know if you've run into this, but be prepared. There is 8 or 9 parts. They are not just about fiddling, but I found it to be a great valuable package.

I've watched at least one part of this awhile ago. Might be worth rewatching - thanks for the suggestion!
