Interesting! Yea I do not know if that neck setup was done on purpose, or just an apparentice made a snafu in the workshop! It's interesting to me that the luthier said that our fingerboards/necks are typically tilted slightly towards the E (treble) side for ease of playing.

Recorded myself mucking about on Lazarus this morning but gotta translate to MP3, upload to media, etc...be back :-) Lazarus is still twitchy and goes out of tune a lot...I think the whole instrument is just getting used to "vibrating" again after decades in the attic!

If you and your luthier have got it playable again, you've done a good thing yes

Instrument "Rescue" haha.
My cat and my dog were also Rescues...
Let me tell ya, my cat and my dog and my 'attic fiddle' have all been good! :-)

( Although at the roommates reunion, they all confessed that they hated the cat...)

I bet if you learned a new tune on it, and practiced it only on that fiddle, it would always sound best on that fiddle.

Here are pics of "Lazarus" after resurrection...

I couldn't dig up the BEFORE pics (lost my phone when travelling, argh) but trust me, he looked bad...no strings, no bridge, and dusty...

And here are some snippets from recording myself mucking around on Lazarus yesterday! (apologies for recording tech: Voice Memos on my iphone - but hopefully you can get the idea)

This "attic fiddle" which came from my friend's grandpa, sounds surprisingly nice...deep, resonant and with a clear mellow E. The bridge has a weird shape due to its unusual neck/fingerboard tilt, so I kept hitting extra strings here and there...but slowly getting used to it.

NC - I like the sound of that fiddle! Or maybe you are making it sound good? Anywho - nice!

Good tone!
That recording sounds just fine to me. That couldn't have been synthetic delay/reverb was it? Sounded like a real kitchen.

Aw thanks! It's harder to play...but I like its mellow sound!

Recording: me standing in my favorite woodshedding spot - the garage. With iphone set to Voice Memos...yea, someday I shall make better recordings! But I HATE recording myself...all I hear is the mistakes...so I do it only for you guys!

As is obvious, I don’t post much. I did happen to visit the site last year when you posted these recordings and really loved your playing and the recorded sound you’re getting from your fiddle. I especially enjoy Cottage in the Glen. That’s all, carry on.

Thanks Johnbow for responding because now I found the recordings!
I also especially liked Cottage in the Glen... already imagining some good euro cinema pic with Irish vibes having this take as the soundtrack...

NCnotes you nailed it !
How cool this story of your fiddle rescue.

Still playing Lazarous?

Aw thanks guys!

YUp, still playing Lazarus!
but I tend to use my other fiddle/violin (the one from my classical days) for faster sessions … because Lazarus’ fingerboard is on backwards or tilted the wrong way or something (forget what luthier called it), so my fingers get tired faster. ( It’s no problem unless there are strings of fast reels, and people are going into the ‘zone’ with 5-6 times through each reel, phew…:-D
