Does this tune go by another name? Yeah, I know, stupid question. It's an oldtime tune, of course it does! I would love to know what alternative names there are for it, it sounds so familiar, but I'd never heard the name before.

Thanks, David,. BJ -- it is sometimes called "Raccoon on a Rail" out of racial sensitivity, which is funny to me
since I always thought it referred to the creature with a tail and not to a human being anyway. I don't know of any other names but it is based on a widespread set of chords -- Boil Them Cabbage, Roscoe, etc, I-IV-I-V-I. Ain't at all a stupid question and in fact there are a number of variations to this tune, which in addition to the Hometown Boys, was recorded by Howard Hamil, the Ala fiddler. Guess what, I just looked it up in Tony Russell and the Columbia 78 was titled "Raccoon on a Rail" -- Bill Helms, fdl, Gid Tanner, bnj, Riley Puckett, gtr. The words "raccoon up a simmon tree, etc" are associated with Boil Them Cabbage. So I guess I ought to edit the title.

It sounds like Possum on a Rail to me. There is a tune on an old compilation of Alabama tunes called Coon on a Rail. If you check you can find a 78 by the Mississippi Possum Hunters doing this tune.
