Ok This is what I recorded so far after 4 mouths of playing. I am looking for honest criticism here. Can you hear a typical mistake that beginners make? I'll Post again in a mouth so I can track my progress or lack there of. See you soon John

This is actually pretty good for someone who's been playing for just 4 months.

It's easy to tell that you were already a musician before starting on the fiddle.

Sounds like you're bowing ever thing with a "saw stroke" (one note per bow) which is just fine given where you are.

About the only thing I can find to criticise is that the "D" played with the 3rd finger on the A-String sounds a little flat to me at the end of the A-part both times through.  The intonation on the other notes sounds good though.

It definitely sounds like you're on the right track.

Thanks For the comment. Yes I am using the "Saw Stroke" on the whole thing. I have to pay attention to that A string. Thanks for the advice. John

Hi John,

Your playing has good solid rhythm.  Since you are a musician you know how essential that is.  It will carry you through while you develop a feel for pulling a good tone out of the strings and nailing your intonation.  Beginners usually start out pressing too hard with the bow in an attempt to get a clear tone and pressing too hard with fingers to try to get the right pitch on their notes.

Eventually (and I don't think there are any short cuts) you will find a whole range of voices you can pull from your strings with your bow (it involves finding the perfect balance between bow speed and pressure and the sound point).  Once you start to feel this, you'll vary how much pressure your bow puts on the strings, but mostly you'll find yourself using much less pressure (i.e., just the weight of the bow with some pressure from the index finger for articulation).

Likewise, your fingering with your left hand eventually will use less pressure.  Beginners mash down because the note sounds bad unless they do.  Your intonation is pretty good for the time you've played so far.  As your intonation sharpens even more and your muscle memory kicks in, your fingers will find the precise millimeter where each note sounds the perfect pitch.  When your fingers automatically land on these exact locations up and down the fingerboard, you'll be able to stop the strings with much less pressure.

I agree with OTJ that you are on the right track.  Keep playing!

You're getting a nice tone. Rhythm and intonation are good as well. I think you know what you have to do to progress from here. Just more of the work you've already been doing. Good Luck. It's fun isn't it!

Hey...4 months!!!! You're doing very well. From what I see, the other posts pretty well cover what you need to work on...believe me...and them....coming off playing other instruments is a big plus....but this here devils box can be a real challenge...still, the rewards are greater than any other instrument you can pick up...at least it is for me...and I play 4 other instruments. Looking at your Bio...you have PLENTY of free time to practice!

It's been almost 2 years since you posted your 4 month old version. Please post a current version of the same song. I'm anxious to hear your version today. I love this song and play it all the time.
