Here's a set of 3 Welsh hornpipes (in the key of G). Translations of the titles are: Mr Pring's Hornpipe; the Corwen March; The Man with the Mouth. Apparently Mr Pring was an organist at Bangor Cathedral (in my home town) in the 19th Century, so it's presumably quite a local tune. Corwen is a small town fairly near to the English border in Mid/North Wales. The final tune comes from the Welsh gypsy tradition.

YES!!! I especially enjoyed the last tune. Those Welsh gypsies are alright!

I agree with mojo monk - the 3rd one's especially nice...
So, what is it about a Welsh hornpipe that distinguishes it from a Welsh reel - if there are Welsh reels?

Nice playing. I wondered what Welsh tunes sounded like, these are quite jolly. Thanks for sharing some with us.

Thanks for all the nice comments. [:)]
In Welsh music, as in Irish but unlike OT, hornpipes tend to be played slightly slower than reels (although, as here, not always very slowly) and with a bouncier rhythm, while reels are played straight. Compared to Irish music, I'd say that Welsh has more hornpipes and fewer reels.
There are quite a lot of less jolly sounding Welsh tunes out there. I'll try to get some other types of stuff recorded soon.

I LOVE hornpipes more than reels. (Maybe because I don't do reels justice when I play them.) I'd love to hear more Welsh tunes, jolly, or otherwise. I actually like the darker sounding tunes too.
