I have not tried recording in a long time. I looked through what I had done previously and this seems to be the only one that would not be copyright protected, so, here it is. Be kind, sorry, it's kind of a classical sounding thing. I was trying to learn how to use recording equipment at the time, but have not had the time or inclination to fuss with it lately. This was recorded with a Rode NT1-A microphone. I possibly added too much reverb.

Nice, very nice.  Fine touch of vibrato too.

Excellent!!!  I think your recorded sound is outstanding (way better than mine) as is your playing.  The reverb sounds natural, like you were playing in a big room.  Not overdone at all.  Wonderful job!  Post some more when you can.

I may have to look into the Rode...

Thanks for all the kind comments. Glad you liked it. I guess I am just so used to hearing professional recordings that my expectations are entirely too high, I guess. The guy at the Apple store told me to add reverb, then take it back down to where you don't hear it, or almost can't hear it, and that should be enough. I still was not sure if it was too much. I know that when I hear a recording with a lot of reverb, I always think it usually is hiding or masking something, so I was hoping I didn't have that sound of hiding behind reverb. The Rode is just a bit over $200, so it's quite reasonable. Also, in it's price range it really is supposed to be one of the quietest mics around.

Really pretty.  I don't think there's too much reverb.  I practice in the bathroom a lot, for that very reason.

You are right, it does have something of a "classical" feel.  Don't feel that this is a criticism.  Ash Grove is in 3/4 time so it would probably be hard to give it a different sound.  Another one of those hotshot Texas fiddlers !!!  What are they putting in the water down there ?  Going to visit my daughter in Canyon TX next month.  I will have to bring a barrel of water back to Alabama.

Lovely. Was It the mic or 'Good Playing & Good Player' responsible? :)

Nice piece, well played!
My wife and I play Ash Grove with baroque recorder and violin (aka...fiddle and wooden whistle with a lot of holes!) It's OT in a different space.
Upload more!

Very nice indeed....very well played..."how much" reverb, eq etc is all subjective....your settings were fine.

I put down the fiddle and play that piece on English Concertina while my friends lay in Irish flute, fiddle, mandolin and guitar. We can go round and round for hours on that.

That was beautiful.

What I heard in terms of tone, intonation, phrasing, tempo, actually everything, could serve as a reference work for those of us who are far less accomplished.

I agree that that was a bit too much reverb... but I don't think we are being kind- you do play quite well- good tone, and I agree, a very nice vibrato that's not overdone. I would love to hear more... in fact, I'm downloading Lochenside right now. It does sound a little classical, but I think that sound is very typical of Scottish players playing slow airs, so I think you are well within the tradition on that count. I was reading a thread on homerecording.com, and it said that a "big hall" reverb is used to get a traditional "classical concert" sound, but that you should use very little reverb if that's not the sound you are after. Less reverb gives a more intimate sound, I think they said. If you drop the reverb level just a little, I think you will nail the "big concert hall" reverb sound, or you could drop it a lot for a more intimate sound, whichever you prefer.

Just learning this one myself. Upon some internet bird dogging I found that it's a Welsh tune and was brought to the U.S. like so many other tunes. It sounds real nice on a mandolin, and even on a banjo (Jay Buckey's site demonstrates this).

I think this tune would get a bunch of the Waltzers out on the dance floor. I'm gonna try it at the next jam.

And ... beautiful job. Thanks for sharing that.

John, I'm glad to hear that you are enjoying learning and  playing the tune.  Thanks for the information about it's origin.

Lovely work here. I didn't notice too much reverb at all. Great vibrato.
