It's been so long I don't remember... I learned it in the early 70's!!!
There's a really good possibility that it's from Doc Watson's flatpicked version, though! Back then I considered Doc Watson borderline Old Time because he DID play clawhammer.
I do also play the Wade Ward version on banjo, which is simpler in the high part. I like the high part I have here, partly because it makes a very effective grid for testing out new bowing patterns without worrying about string changes. You can clearly hear that the bowing examples I have posted are based on June Apple.
