You've caught how Melvin played the tune and done it quite well.

Thanks, Carl. I really appreciate it! Did you get to spend some time with Melvin? I would have really liked to meet him.

Yes. I met him in 1973, just before started to play banjo. I visited him quite often and traveled, with him, to the Chicago Folk Festival in 1977 and to Fiddle Tunes, in Washington State, in 1982 (recordings of the acoustic concert were made by many; I got a copy, got permission and have been distributing them, for free, at the Melvin Wine Memorial Concert, in April in Sutton, and at the West Virginia Folk Festival in Glenville, in about three weeks from now.). There are a few cuts from Chicago and Fiddle Tunes on my BHO web page <banjohangout.org/myhangout/mus...?id=24368>.

Hi Carib, that all sounds wonderful! traveling around and playing music with Melvin and the recordings you have. Maybe I'll get to that Glenville festival one of these years :)

After me, he went on to have two other great banjo players play with him, Kate Brett (Enoch) and Ron Mullenex, who played on his recordings (cassettes) "Hannah at the Springhhouse" and "Vintage Wine". All of the about a dozen older WV fiddlers who were at Glenville when I first went there are gone, except for Frank George. The highlight, I think, of the present day festival is the square dance in which a 24x60 foot outdoor, ply wood floor is filled from 8-11pm Thursday, Friday and Saturday (no teaching, just dancing). The group gospel sing also has been spectacular.

PS Just posted on the Facebook page for the West Virginia State Folk Festival: "The great Folk Festival Square dances will be held from 8-11 pm on June 16, 17, and 18 on Conrad Court Street between City Square Park and United Bank. Several callers will be present, including Mack Samples, Lou Maiuri, Taylor Runner, Tony Minney, Bill Oshe, and others. Thursday night's band will be Jesse Milnes and friends, Friday will be Dave Bing and friends, and Saturday will be Bobby Taylor and friends. You won't find a better square dance than the Folk Festival dances!
