I'm new to banjo listening so I have to ask--am I right in thinking you're playing it two-finger style? Nice. What's the source for the tune?

Ajisai...yes, it is thumb lead 2 finger, the *source* is nominally Tommy Jarrell's fiddle version, but I just kind of made it up actually. Posted it here since I'm selling the 100 year old Orpheum #3 banjo that I played it on, and didn't have a better source for access to the tune...!! Should post my fiddle version here as well. Hope that all is well with you!

Cool. Matt got me hooked on the style (long story) and I've been working on Cacklin Hen--the Brown/Seeger version. I love it! Nice to hear your take on this tune. I really want to be able to play by ear that way.

Yep, had surgery on my arm a couple of years ago, and sometimes the stiffness in it precludes me playing a lot of CH, so I just go to thumb or index lead 2 finger and still get the old time sound...would love to hear your Cacklin' Hen! The ear thing will kind of happen overnight, just keep listening to lot's of old time "old time"...!

Yup. It has a relaxed feel and I like that sometimes. Cacklin' Hen is a long-term project (my jaw dropped when I heard how fast it's really played) but sure. One of these days I'll get a nice clean recording and I'd be happy to share.

I hear you, used to love playing "Cacklin" Hen" on the fiddle until I heard Louie Bluie (Howard Armstrong) play it on Terry Zwigoff's film of the same name...I don't play that tune anymore..haha!

Sorry for so many notes. Feel free to delete them if you want to clean up the page. But -- you know what I love about that clip? The piano player! I tried Drunken Hiccups in G tuning this morning. Kind of fun. I'll have to record myself one of these days and then go back and listen to you and see if we have any overlap in the way we approach it.
Okay -- see the trash can icon? Feel free to click it. : )

Hahaha...no worries, I'm not deleting anything!
That piano player is funny, Louie uses the whole bow on that tune!
Lot's of open notes for the banjo in G, when you're done with that one, I'll send you a version in D based on Clyde Davenport's banjo playing...!
Always fun to chat about OT, never get tired of it...
