BTW, I had a set of Knilling Perfection geared tuners put on my good fiddle. SI far they seem to work ok. THey don't slip, they do tune smoothly, but I still use the fine tuners. It seems that one of the tuners has a bit of hysteresis which ius annoying. Not sure it it's defective or the nature of the beast. I haven't really taken the time to evaluate them fully. Too busy just plain playing whaen I get the time. I had a lutier in Syracuse do it while I waited. It cost a total of $100. He was quite proficient and a nice guy. I'm glad I didn't try to do it myself. Thought you might be interested...

I was curious about them, and almost bought a set. I did think that you would be able to take off the fine tuners though, that makes it less appealing to me.

Well, you surely could ditch the fine tuners. If you're using perlon strings you'd have tons of resolution. With the steel strings, you have a little less but certainly enough. I have tuned a couple times using just the Knilling pegs, and it does work. The only things for me is that I have to switch hands when tuning the two high strings. I tune the 2 low strings with my left hand then switch to the right hand for the 2 high strings. With the fine tuners I can do all strings with the same hand. SIlly, I guess but this feels awkward to me. It's just a case of breaking old habits I guess...
