Yes, it's maple. There's no particular reason other than the appearance. It has maple fittings all the way through. The rest of the fiddle is rather plain, so I tell people I put all the eye candy in the fingerboard.

Yes, I coated it with some kind of clear sealant--I forgot exactly what. My fingertips get that black stuff on them from reacting to the strings, so I do have to wipe gray bands off the board if I play it for any length of time.
