Like a lot of other tunes I play - I first learned this tune in the wrong key of G from a recording of Mike Seeger, Alan Jabbour, Tom Kelly, and Gil Carter on a album called “Fresh Oldtime String Band Music”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eh38esA1hZI But now I will usually play it in the more common key of A now – with the fiddle cross-tuned in AEae. Anbd I would guess my version in A would be based on a version recorded of Alan Jabbour with Berteram Levy playing at the Warren Wilson College's Sage Cafe found on the DLA: http://dla.acaweb.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/Warren/id/1880/rec/3 Concerning the recording I have made. I appreciate that Josh Turknett has given me permission to use his Tune Of The Week recording of him playing banjo as my backup. He has some excellent recordings and material for banjo players - which is also great for fiddle players looking for banjo accompaniment. AEAE. Here I am trying to imitate John Engels version found on YouTube. I play along with the video for a few rounds, then continue at tempo. And at the end, I play a few rounds at a slower tempo.

I learned to play this from a recording made by John Hoffman and Mac Benford (It?s About Time). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N0Ta3mxxxCk But ? I think they mistakenly called it ?Old Hen She Cackled?. They only early version of this tune I found that sounds like the tune they recorded was from John Salyer called Old Hen Cackled. John Salyer / AEae https://www.slippery-hill.com/recording/old-hen-cackled Most everything else I heard is not a ?variation? ? but a different ?version?. I have choosen to learn this version, because ?I like it.?
