Played by Kenny Jackson. Learned this during a visit with Birch Monroe in 1981. He played the tune on an old Hopf fiddle that had belonged to his uncle Pendleton Vandiver (the same Uncle Pen of Bill Monroe's famous song). As an added treat, I got to play on Uncle Pen's fiddle - an experience I'll always cherish.

I made this tune up almost twenty years ago, and never came up with a proper name for it. It is just designated Fiddle Tune No. 2 on a cassette tape that I recently rediscovered, and since it has remained otherwise unnamed for so long I might as well just call it Old No. 2. I'd like to think a good flatfooter would have some fun with it. The fiddle is tuned GDGD, using the old-time A432 standard pitch.

Played by Kenny Jackson and Rayna Gellert. This rendition is inspired by the playing of Kentucky fiddler Bill Stepp, who was recorded in 1937 by Alan Lomax in Salyersville.

I composed this march on the day of the Winter Solstice 2012, and made a recording of it the same day here in my home in the North Carolina woods.
