I suppose I shouldn't be, it isn't something I haven't done before. Growing up, during the South Dakota fiddle contest, players would be taken into a room and record a few songs. It was one and done, so if you messed up you messed up. I wasn't ever nervous because I started doing it so young...I was never nervous back then.
My next experience involved recording in what was described as a 'chicken coop' studio, which wasn't far from the truth. It was a step up from a chicken coop, but not a big step. I did learn the process and how things work in a studio though. It was so strange to me to be able to take multiple shots at songs if you weren't happy with the previous take.
A couple of years ago, a friend of mine asked if I'd help him with a demo cd. Of course, it is good experience. The songs weren't really the style that I like to play, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out (except that he forgot to list me on one of the songs on the cover)! :) It was more a recording for the guy, just because he always wanted to do it, so not so serious.
So tomorrow night, I am going to put down tracks on two songs for the friend mentioned in the above paragraph. One is kind of an easy going type song, and the other is a quick little bluegrass tune. I've done the prep work, including typing a rough draft of what I want to do. It should be fun, but the guys are forming a band and want to use these songs to book jobs, so it is a little more serious than I'm used to. I have sent a rough copy of one of the songs, and they still want me to record, so I hope I'm on the right track.
One thing that I'm trying to be diligent in is saving a copy of each step of the process, meaning version 1, version 2, until final copy. I think that would give an interesting look back on how this works.
