First week down

Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Well, after my very first week of ever pickin up a fiddle, I can say this.  What the heck have I gotten myself into?  Luckily my passion for wanting to learn this darn instrument has kept me coming back.  I have had some ups and downs already.  My first lesson was a bit of a disappointment, but at least it got me going.  Every time I think I am getting the basics right, I screw up.  I have quickly learned if I am getting tired, then its time to put the fiddle down, because I start doing some lazy things and really sounding like a screaming cat.  I am really struggling with the left hand.  Thank heavens for this forum.  The folks here have really kept me going.  I did buy one of those electronic tuning helpers.  Good thing, because right now, my ear just doesnt cut it.  My instructor started me out with bile them cabbage down.  I think there are two verses to this song,  I am not for sure, but every once in a while I do ok with the first verse, but in no time at all I really screw it up.  Latelely, I decided Mary had a little lamb is more appropriate for my skill level.  Im still not too good at it either.  Crazy thing is,  all this scratchin that I have been doin, actually entertains my little ones, LOL 8 comments

Well I have always wanted to play the fiddle, but I never thought I had the brains or skills necessary to even play a note much less a song. Just recently I was listening to a Blue Grass Band play and told the wife how much I really wish I could do that. Well, she said...why dont you? .....hmmm I dunno. The next day I called a guy who teaches fiddle and now here I am. 37 years old and trying to learn the fiddle with absolutely no musical background at all, but all the determination in the world.
