Fiddlers Fake Book

Friday, April 22, 2011

Finally picked up a copy of Fiddlers Fake Book, although most of my tunes I try to work on by ear the notation is good for bowing and slurs. Often when I've forgotten how a tune starts the first measure is all that's needed to remember the melody and catch the rhythm.  Quite a few of the tunes are also on the "Fiddle Hell" cd which should be a great help as I would like to have played most of the fifty tunes before heading over to Fiddle Hell week.  Its a great resource pretty soon there will a dozens of sticky notes marking the pages where I have learned a tune. So far I think there might be about a dozen or so tunes I know, that leaves about 480, but there will be lacrosse games and crew regatta's  to watch not to mention gardening this spring and the "Honey Do" list.  All that is just fine it isn't a race think I will just enjoy the process of learning a few at a time.

I played some Viola back in the 60's as a child. My son plays violin and is awesome. He is my occasional instructor.I became interested in fiddle when my daughters were competing in Irish step dancing. I listened to the horn pipes and jigs and wished I had never given up strings for brass. My first child traded her flute for a violin at college-this did not set well with my wife- and left it at home for my son as a spare violin to take to school on cold snowy days. He named it the "crappy violin". Well I picked a couple of basic fiddle books and have been playing " old crappy ever since'. 25 years happily married to an ex Opera singer musician who thinks its cute at my feeble attempts with such tough classics as the "Irish Washer Women" . 6 six wonderful children all with far greater musical talents than my own a truly blessed man. A good friend of mine "Bindle Stick Bill" is my inspiration for picking up where I left off insisting that I have a Renaissance project in my life.
