Wow, Barry1963. Have you learned to read alto clef yet? Do you find some fiddle tunes especially well suited for the viola?

Im learning to read alto. Im fair at treble so its not to bad, just takes some getting used to. Like I said, I bought some Viola method books and have been working out of those. I reading simple things pretty decent. I plan to begin working on a more difficult piece,J.S. Bach Suite No. 1- Prelude, arr. for Viola , starting in Dec. I want to throughly get through book 1 first. I have hopes of joining a community orchestra spring of 2013, but we'll have to see how well Im reading at that time. I think as fiddle tunes go, almost anything "celtic" sounds good on Viola. Christmas tunes also sound quite lovely which Ive been working out a few of those by ear to strengthen that aspect, How is your Viola playing coming along and what plans if any do you have ?

PS. just Barry will do, no need in adding the 1963 :)

Barry, you are ambitious with your goal of playing Bach. People often say that one of the advantages of playing the viola, compared to violin, is that there are fewer violists and more opportunities for them. I played second violin in community orchestras for many years and loved it. I'd still do it, but I don't have a car and it's awfully hard to get rides from other people. I've been using my viola mainly for jamming. It works really well for folk music for one of the same reasons that it works really well for classical music. It weaves together the sounds of many other instruments well. I'm attracted to playing a lot of tunes with a dark sound on my viola, but it sounds beautiful on all kinds of tunes. Now I've got to try playing some Xmas carols on my viola.

Barry, what is the other forum? I like watching you play because I feel that you are a real person, even one whom I know. You sound good and look at home with your viola. I'd like to critique your playing, and I hope you don't mind. I can write this directly to you as a friend, but I don't remember how. I'll try.
