Tune lists

From transplant on 8/31/2011 5:21:47 AM

We had the power out for most of yesterday, so I sat and fiddled with the viola to see what tunes wanted to come out into the air. Here's my short list, all in a usual fiddle key, but an octave down unless noted :

  • Ashokan Farewell (in its fiddle octave, needs a quick shift or two up the neck, but not much)
  • Rock the Cradle Joe
  • Road to Boston
  • Spootiskerry
  • Jack Broke da Prison Door
  • My Cape Breton Home
  • Lincolnshire Poacher/Widna Wint His Gruel (in G)
  • Cock of the North/Auntie Mary had a Canary (in D)
  • Batchelder's
  • The Ash-Grove (in its fiddle octave in G)
  • Planxty Fanny Power
  • Saint Kilda Wedding (in its fiddle octave, in D)

There are some Playford tunes, old ones that sit well on the viola. At the moment all I can think of are:

  • Child Grove
  • Nonesuch
  • Stingo, or Oil of Barley

There are also a whole lot of fiddle tunes I take down a fifth, and use the fiddle's fingering. Just a few of them:

  • Garfield's Hornpipe (a fourth-finger workout)
  • Miss Shepherd's (goes all over the board in first position, and changes modes. Fun tune)
  • Harvest Home / Cincinnati Hornpipe (similar tunes, but different enough to cause mild confusion)

That's all I can think of at the moment, but there is a whole lot more.

Why Not !, I dont know a half of them, yet my very curious mind wants to hear all of them, I wish I will do that.
