sound better cold?

From Diane in Chicago on 8/29/2011 7:50:30 PM

Okay, it is not really a viola anymore, I just put octave violin strings on it.

I get better tone out of it when I pick it up cold.  But halfway through the first tune, the strings sound just plain crappy.  Hard to get a nice clean note on the A and E.

Now, granted, this is a cheap piece of junk. A Lark.  Say no more.

But why does it deteriorate halfway through a tune?
