Buying a Big Fiddle!

From forestabri on 4/14/2012 2:12:00 PM

Hi everyone, I've been a FHO member for years and have just been offered to buy a 1954 Kay C-1 bass. I'll be learning to play and would be interested in any help or info I can get my hands on. Hope someone is still interested in this group. I can keep you busy!

Congrats Brian, The old Kays were and still are very popular. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. There is a web site with lots of info on the Kay basses. Try Google to find it. You can enter the serial No. and find out production info. That is how I was able to identify my 1946 Swingmaster. Best wishes!

Thank you Tim. I have checked the website and it is definitely a 1954. So I'm a year older than it is! It is in good overall shape except for normal wear and a little delamination at the bottom on the back, nothing serious. I'll post pictures when the owner brings it over the mountain to me. I already play electric bass, but this is a different animal altogether, so here I go!

It will take a little while to get used to the wider finger patterns but once you get that down there'll be no stopping you. Your experience on the electric will come in handy. There is nothing like the sound & feel of an up right bass thumping away!
