This is an American violin made by Thomas L. Hofto of Tacoma, Washington in 1920. The maker learned from a Polish maker named Trognitz in California before setting up shop in 1915. He was a violinist as well and ran a business until his death.

This violin has been played quite a lot and has had a number of repairs. It was taken to The Violin House of Weaver to refurbish it recently, and there cracks were repaired and the original varnish that had been flaking off was replaced. Some previous repairs that were solid but uneven were left as they were. It was played by a jazz player in DC until recently. The string heights are lower than usual, as is the player’s preference. It has been through a lot but it has a rather nice tone. The nut is made of imitation ivory. The instrument represents a piece of Tacoma history and it’s pleasant to play. It fits the bill for a lot of fiddlers—it’s got some scars from a long life of playing and it’s somewhat idiosyncratic, but it has a good voice.

The violin will be packed in a lightweight case for shipping unless a different option is requested. Bows are also available, some of which are listed on the marketplace.
