This one will make you do some slidding into the B note, back to A#, then to C# and back to B. It's still rusty but I wanted to get a recording made.
This is a favorite song for Christians this time year. It was written in the Fall of 1912 by George Bennard. Evangelist Billy Sunday used this hymn for his crusades. Sunday held a revival here in the Knoxville area during the '20's. My Great Aunt was named Billy as a result. My grandfather used to tell how they would take a wagon full of people to those tent revival meeting.
I am using a Charles J. Horner violin and a Martin D-18 with some reverb for effect.

One additional note about this hymn being in 3/4 time or that of a waltz. Waltz comes from the old German word walzen to roll, turn, or to glide. The waltz was considered an immoral dance only one hundred years prior to when this song was written because of the close proximity of the dancers.

Even though it didn't convert me: About fifty years ago a fine neighbor of ours who was a devout Christian had laryngitis(sp?) and had me sing the Old Rugged Cross in his place at some sort of doings at his church. Fine song and I had a great time. Arguably the only Jew who has ever sung "The Old Rugged Cross" in a Baptist church. Even at that young age it made me realize that if we hung out in each others churches every now and then the World would be a better place.
