Written in 1851 by Stephen Foster, the song is also known as Way Down Upon the Swanee River after the first words of the lyrics.
He intentionally misspelled the river Suwannee so it would fit the melody. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Folks_at_Home

Hey Chuck, you are building quite a list of Civil War era tunes. I think you are ready to get some period clothes and show up at a reenactment. Nice job on this tune!

Wrangle up yer mouth parts, drag yer banjer out, tune yer ole geetar till it twangs right stout, for the snow is on the mountain and the wind is on the plain, so we''ll cut the chimny''s moanin with a livelier refrain.

Tim,

I would eat that up. I added an antebellum banjo to this recording over at BHO on my homepage.
