Old-Time Fiddle Workshop with Stephanie Coleman

2:00-5:00 PM

$35 per person

held in the West End area of Winston-Salem


In this workshop, designed for intermediate to advanced fiddle players, participants will learn old-time tunes by ear with a special emphasis on bowing. We will start with a tune or two from southern Illinois, then move south to North Carolina, Virginia, and Kentucky. As we traverse the eastern half of the United States, we will focus on bowing, ornaments and tunings and draw parallels between the various regional styles. We will learn and play the tunes together and also examine the original source recordings. The use of a recording device is highly recommended.


A bit about Stephanie:

Growing up in the Chicagoland area, Stephanie Coleman developed a profound fondness for deep dish pizza, the Chicago Bears, and... old-time music. At nine years old, she attempted to scratch out a version of "Johnny Don't Get Drunk" taught to her by her father and began honing her skills at regional festivals and barn dances. Upon moving to Durham, North Carolina to attend college at Duke University, Stephanie continued to explore different regional styles of fiddling including those of south-central Kentucky, western North Carolina, and northern Virginia. Her playing reflects the melodic Midwestern style fiddling of her youth blended with the syncopated bowing of Surry County, North Carolina. At 23 years old, Stephanie has performed and taught at festivals, workshops, and dances throughout the United States and Ireland and remains a regular finalist in the renowned fiddle contest at Clifftop. This year, she will be playing fiddle with the all-girl string band Uncle Earl.
