This version and tempo was on Norman Blake's Lighthouse on the Shore Album.

Nice work, Chuck--especially for someone who calls himself "Just Startin'". Good tune too; it has a quality of getting into the mind and staying there. (And not much stays in my mind any more.) I don't think I've heard it before.

Thanks, Rich. You are being generous. BTW, what do you think of violin and mandolin playing melody together? If I could figure out the chords I would have added guitar. To me it provides a nice even tempered tone.

I think the violin and mandolin together give an interesting texture to the melody. It kind of teases the ear ... "just what am I hearing here?" The two challenges, since I guess they are in exactly the same range, are that the intonation on both instruments has to be precise or the dissonance jumps out at you painfully, and you have to pay close attention to the balance (of volume). I thought the fiddle could stand out a bit more, but then I could be prejudiced.

If you are able to find or work out the chords, it would be well worth re-recording (that will also let you hear your progress in the interim). That would give some extra grounding and richness to it, and I find (even though I don't do it all that often with fiddle tunes) that working through the chords is a lot of fun (when it's not frustrating--hmm--kinda like the fiddle in that regard) and a very effective way of getting to know the tune even better, from the inside out as it were.

Very nice! I just started learning Cuckoo's Nest. I'm learning a very different version, but clearly the same tune. I like the fiddle/mando combination. It's a sweet and haunting melody.

I bet you are learning the one in D Paul. That is the one I learned to flat pick when I took from Kaufman in the 80's. Like you said, sounds a lot different.
