Loy asked if I knew Rose of Sharon. I hope this recording is close to accurate and I apologize in advance to those members who have a problem with me recording something before I have it down pat. Therefore, beginners beware!!!!!

Loy,

I just appreciate you letting me know about this beautiful waltz. If you get anymore, let me know.

Just an aside, we have been discussing playing by ear.

The perils of playing by ear is that you will sometimes not get a chance to hear it twice, or you will hear a version that might not be totally accurate, or you might just get a partial section and you will have to go with what sounds right.

You bet! I see your point about playing by ear,I cant read music and dont really care to learn I just play to suit myself with an occasional tune thrown in that my wife likes so if I am not "dead nuts correct" It doesnt get my undies in a wad! thanks for the help Chuck! Loy

Chuck -- here's another version on the FHO jukebox -- I learned it from this version:

It's amazing the different interpretations! Yours is really great -- but quite different from this one!

Mine is not an interpretation since from the time I got Loy's email to the time of the recording was about 30 minutes. This is why I mentioned for beginners to beware.

Also, when I play a waltz I imagine a couple dancing and that influences the speed at which I play.

I didn't probably phrase that correctly!! I just meant it's amazing that there are so many versions of the old tunes out there -- and there can be quite a difference -- while yet remaining so much the same!

And I do like the version you played -- very much!!!

Of course, this makes it a real mess for us newbies -- when we learn a tune -- are we learning the "real" one for our region? I think our local jam plays it more like you... so I have to re-learn it! There's a lot of tunes that way! It's like we have to learn 3 or 4 versions of everything!

Please do not think I took your comments in a negative way, Carol. You are always so complimentary.

I have had the same thing occur with Clyde Davenport's version vs the way that I have always heard a tune played. He will always say after I play a tune, "now do you want to hear it in the old time way". I know that I am in for a woodshed moment.

Best Regards, Carol.
