I posted three photos of my Hardanger fiddle for your viewing pleasure. I'll put some more up later this week as well a couple more old-time tunes on the Hardanger.

I have heard about Hardanger fiddles but this is the first picture I've seen of one. They seem to have more that 4 strings. Thanks for putting up the picture so I could get some idea what the were.

Yes. They have 4 strings that are on top of the fingerboard- the ones you play. They also have 4-5 understrings that run under the fingerboard and over a "lower" bridge (actually part of the overall bridge. Mine has 5 understrings. The purpose of these strings is to vibrate sympathetically. That's what gives Hardangers that ethereal sound. It's like the ancients approach to reverb. I will have some pictures to show how the strings run and some more recordings of old-time tunes played on it.
I have mine tuned as follows: top strings are ADAE and the understrings are BDEF#A, both listed from bass to treble. Hardangers with 4 understrings drop the B. In Norway they are usually tuned a step higher than what I have listed.

The first Hardanger fiddle player I ever heard was Sadie Compton.
She loves her Hardanger so much, she had its inlay tattooed on her back!
