It's a Kentucky fiddle tune I think.
Buddy Thomas recorded it on his CD entitled "Kitty Puss" (I know, it sounds like a James Bond thing, but it's really the title of another fiddle tune on the CD.)

Anyhow, Buddy Thomas was a really good fiddler and the CD's worth having. But you can by the MP3 separately using the link above.
I don't play the tune though.

Hey thank you OTJ :) I am going to check link out.
I am starting to have more interest in where songs come from and who might have played them. First it was John Hartford then Tommy Jarrell, then Henry Reed and now looks like Buddy Thomas. So many good fiddlers out there!
Yep that's the song OTJ......Like his style too!

IMO the high B note Buddy hits on the high part of Blue Goose on the Kitty Puss record must be one of the prettiest single notes of old-time fiddling ever recorded.

So both of those links are Buddy Thomas?
After slowing the song down with audacity then trying to play those notes on first part reaching up with pinky I am humbled to say the least.
That is some amazing fiddle playing... wow it really makes me want to either hang it up or work and practice harder.

I love that tune. It's also surprisingly difficult to play. I always make a mess of it.

I think that Buddy got that awesome sound on the high B note by sliding in to it with the 3rd finger. I always used my pinky finger until I read in some liner notes that Buddy liked the lonesome sound you get by sliding up. This seems to get me closer to the sound I want to hear.

Glen..I tried that and I guess my fingers are too short cause when I get it then try to come back down the I always end up being sharp on the next note that follows.
Oh well it's good practice to try right?

Yeah I'm only just getting the hang of shifting. Surprisingly, a lot of older fiddlers could do this with ease. I was learning the Clyde Davenport/Leonard Rutherford version of Billy in the Lowground and they would slide in and out of 2nd position quite a bit instead of using the pinky. Recently, I met an old time fiddler from the Madeleine Islands who can shift into 2nd and 3rd position without second thought. I think its just something you have to force yourself to do at first.

By the way Glen great double stops I have been listening to your music.
Some day I hope to find a fiddle with that deep old time sound your fiddle has.
Very rich tone your fiddle has, where is the sound post is it right at foot of E on bridge or is it back toward tailpiece?

My soundpost is set back from the bridge towards the tailpeice about 1/2 inch. I've wondered if the fact that my fiddle has 4 external fine tuners is choking the sound a bit and giving it a darker sound. I have just bought a Thomastik tailpeice with built-in fine tuners that I haven't installed yet. Will see what kind of difference that makes.
willy - Posted - 01/02/2009: 08:23:14
My fiddle is OK but it is loud and E / A are a bit to bright for me, I realized the F holes on my fiddle are wider than many I have seen and that is a factor but the deep sound I want is hard to get (D and G are ok though).
As for the fine tuners I have 4 of them and it does not seem to change the sound much as I have swapped the tail piece before with a different wood and only 1 fine tuner with not much change in fiddle sound.
Then again my ears are not as good as they use to be so who knows.
Biggest factor in change for my fiddle is sound post by far I once moved it about 1 inch back and it really had a major impact on tone. However I then had harder time getting in tune with the claw hammer banjo player I play with so I went back to the old spot.
Trying to move that sound post and get it straight will make ya learn new cuss words I tell ya. Don't try it if your trying to 2 quit smoking or learning to be a good monk.
